Ocean Park Introduces The Bowmouth Guitarfish Into Its Atoll Reef Aquarium

Ocean Park Hong Kong | 2005-04-22

The bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma) has joined the Ocean Park family and settled at Atoll Reef as part of a livestock exchange program with the Taipei Sea World on March 1, 2005. It has completed its quarantine period and is now being introduced to Ocean Park visitors.

The bowmouth guitarfish is named for its distinctive mouth, shaped like a bow. Also known as a shark ray, due to its mouth and gill openings located underneath a wide disc head like a ray and the tail and body being shaped like a shark. Bowmouth guitarfish are usually found in marine waters off of South Africa to the Red Sea, as well as Eastern Australia up through northern and southern Japan.

“We are delighted to have this new species, the bowmouth guitarfish at Ocean Park. She is 145 cm long and her favorite foods are crabs, shrimps and clams. Narration and educational programmes by our Education Ambassadors will highlight her for our guests in order help raise their commitment to conservation and the protection of our precious oceans,” said Suzanne Gendron, Zoological Operations & Education Director, Ocean Park.

The Ocean Park Hong Kong endeavors to exhibit a wide variety of fishes to the visitors. This is first time co-operation with Taipei Sea World brings the bowmouth guitarfish to the Park. Ocean Park exchanges animals with other world-class aquariums internationally, such as Xiamen Underwater World, China, Tokyo Sea Life Park and Aquamarine Fukushima, Japan, and Oceanatio de Lisboa, from Portugal, Waikiki Aquarium, USA , London Zoo, UK.
